When starting a new renovation project, colors and materials aren't the only things that need to be decided. Managing the thrash may not be as fun as assembling the new furniture, but it is nonetheless an essential part of any renovation project.
The more ambitious your project is, the more trash you'll get throughout the process. Odds are that the old walls and cabinets that you are going to take down will not fit in any of your garbage can. The simplest way to get rid of all the trash coming from the renovations is to rent a roll off dumpster.
What Is A Roll Off Dumpster
A dumpster, for starter, is a large metallic container that is meant to collect all sorts of trash. There are multiple types of dumpsters available on the market, but a roll off dumpster is one that is meant to contain a very large amount of debris, perfect for any project that involves demolition and construction. Its open top makes it easier for the workers to throw in trash of every dimension.
Dimensions of the receptacle vary from a company to another, but you can generally choose between four sizes: 15, 20, 30 and 40 cubic yards. Some companies also offer 10 cubic yard roll-off dumpstesr to rent. In order to fit on specialized trucks, they are all 7 feet wide, but vary in height and length.
Why Renting It?
A roll-off dumpster requires a specialized truck in order to be hauled on any roadway. Cities do not empty them up when doing the weekly trash collection because their trucks are not properly equipped to do so. Plus, you can't simply park it in your garage all year long. Buying one therefore makes no sense. Renting one, on the other hand, is super easy, cheap and allows you to go through your renovation project without lining up a series of garbage cans in front of your house.
These trucks are equipped with winches and cables, which are used to unload the charge by a hydraulically operated system. Because it is not on wheels, you can't simply hitch it behind your vehicle. When you rent one, the company that rents it to you drops it off when your project starts and picks it up when your projects ends or when it is full.
Some states require a permit for the rental of a roll-off dumpster. Some areas require one even if you are going to park it on your own property. Rental companies will either get it for you, or at least help you out with it.
Can You Throw Everything In The Dumpster?
No! No matter what type of dumpster you are renting, whether it is one meant to collect metal or an army dumpster, there are certain items that can't be thrown in it. Some companies have their own regulations as to what they don't accept and some companies will require you to rent a second dumpster, one that is meant to collect specific items, such as yard waste or recyclable goods.
Here is a list of items that are not accepted by most companies:
What Do You Do If You Have Hazardous Waste?
Some items may contain hazardous components but aren't federally regulated. If they are not regulated by the EPA, they might be by some states. To be on the safe side, check with your dumpster rental company.
Items that cannot be thrown in a dumpster have to be brought to a specialized recycling center, so they can be disposed properly. Please note that some recycling plants don't take all kinds of hazardous waste. Before bringing them over to your nearest one, check with your local authorities where you can safely dispose of them.
